Nadal is amongst the favourites to win this year's ATP World Tour Finals. This is hardly surprising given his form this year, and the fact that he's likely to finish the tournament as the year-end No. 1.
That said, the Spaniard's form has tailed off a little since the US Open, and the year-end title has proven elusive in the past. It's without a doubt a glaring omission from his bulging trophy cabinet.
Nadal's charge at the xxxx Tour Finals in London will begin today with a round robin clash against Ferrer.
Usually there would be no question about Nadal's status as the favourite, as his 20-5 head-to-head record against his compatriot has hardly been accumulated by chance. However, Ferrer was impressive throughout last week's Paris Masters and managed to record a rare win over Nadal, snapping a nine-match losing streak in the process.
Nadal will enter this tie as the favourite regardless, though it's worth pointing out that this is probably his weakest surface. The fact that he's been a dominant force in the ATP since xxxx without ever winning this title appears to back this up.
Today's showdown promises to be an entertaining one. Nadal has a habit of producing the goods when it matters the most, but that fact that he's only reached the final of this event on one occasion in the past suggests that he might come unstuck.
If Ferrer serves as well as he did all week in Paris he might just be in with a chance.
